Solved Examples on how to Construct Expressions in Algebra
Example 1:
Alia has k beads in a bag. Write an expression for the total number of beads she has in the bag when:Â
a.   She puts in two more beads.
Solution:  An expression for the total number of beads when Alia puts two more beads in a bag having k beads already, is:
k + 2
b.  She takes out 5 beads
Solution:  An expression for the total number of beads when Alia takes out 5 beads from a bag having k beads already, is:
k - 5
Example 2:
The temperature on Friday was t° C. Write an expression for the temperature when it is twice as warm as it was on Friday.
Solution:Â
Twice means multiply by 2.Â
So,Â
Expression for the temperature twice as warm as it was on Friday is:
2 × t = 2t° C
Example 3:
There are two envelopes on the table. Each envelope has x paperclips. Sania put 4 more paperclips on the table. How many paperclips are there altogether?
Solution:
Two envelopes have x paperclips each. So, paperclips in two envelopes are:
x + x = (1 + 1)x = 2x.
As Sania put 4 more paperclips on table, so paperclips altogether are:
2x + 4
Example 4:
There are 3 jars. Each jar has p counters. 5 counters are placed beside these jars. How many counters are there altogether.
Solution:
3 jars having p counters each means there areÂ
p + p + p = (1 + 1 + 1)p = 3p counters in jars.
As 5 counters are placed beside these jars, so the counters altogether are:
3p + 5Â
Example 5:
Write an expression.
- Start with p
- Multiply it by 3
- then subtract 5
Solution:
Multiplying p by 3 gives 3p.
Expression for subtracting 5 from 3p is:Â
3p - 5
Example 6:
Write an expression.
- Start with q
- Multiply it by 2
- then subtract the result from 24
Solution:
Multiplying q by 2 gives 2q.
Expression for subtracting 2q from 24 is:
24 - 2q
